FREE or low cost activities to do with your kids over a school break

By Alyssa Knutti February 19, 2019

This week is Mid--Winter recess for most of the state, meaning I have both kids all week and need to come up with some fun ideas and activities. A lot of kids go to camps while on break, if you don't want to put your kid in a camp or can't afford to, here are some fun Low cost or FREE ideas.

1. Do you want to build a snowman? Princess Anna from Frozen was onto something with this. Building a snowman is a lot of fun, and it's free! We built a snowman and added a scarf and hat to it. We found sticks and rocks from our yard.

2. You could go for a hike or go sledding for FREE or low cost. Check out the article this week about winter hikes in the area, or the article related to sledding hills.

3. Visit a bookstore with a café or train table, like at Barnes & Noble. Bonus, if you're there during story time.

4. Visit a library. Several libraries offer more programming during school break weeks. Check out our events calendar for some of the local events.

5. Visit a museum, cost of admission would be the only cost there. Bonus, some museums offer special programs during break week.

6. Visit the zoo; cost of admission would be the cost. Some zoos offer special 'days' during break week without the kids being at the camp.

7. Do a craft. Here are some you can do that incorporate recycling.

8. If you're a member of a YMCA or somewhere with a pool, take advantage of the pool time.

9. Create a movie day at home and pop some popcorn, grab some blankets and cuddle in.

10. Bake cookies or treats. Here is an easy recipe for sugar cookies
